Multiplex analysis was performed in plasma obtained from 670 adult Japanese smokers and 356 non-smokers to identify biomarkers of effect (BoEff) that may be sensitive to cigarette smoking. This analysis indicated differences between smokers and non-smokers in the following twelve biomarkers: alpha 1-antitrypsin (A1AT), alpha 2-macroglobulin (A2MG), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1, CD54), Immunoglobulin A (IgA), interleukin 7 (IL-7), macrophage derived chemokine (MDC), macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha (MIP-1 alpha), matrix metalloproteinases 2 and 9 (MMP-2, MMP-9), thyroxin binding globulin (TBG), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP-1), and tumour necrosis factor RII (TNF RII).
