High temperature oxidation of Nb, NbC and Ni3Nb and oxygen enhanced crack growth

摘要
The oxidation of Nb, NbC and Ni3Nb at high temperatures was studied. Samples were oxidized as a function of temperature and constant oxygen exposure. Observed X-ray photoelectron spectra demonstrate that the process yields oxides of ranging stoichiometry, with Nb2O5 formed only on NbC and Ni3Nb. The Nb2O5 peak areas are at least 21 percentage points higher for Ni3Nb than NbC, showing preferential oxidation of Ni3Nb to Nb2O5. In addition, the average total oxide thickness is greatest for Nb, followed by Ni3Nb and NbC, respectively. The more readily oxidized intermetallic γ″(Ni3Nb) precipitates suggests a contribution to crack growth enhancement from the oxidation of this phase.
