A new Al(III) oxalate complex, (C2H10N2)(2).[Al-2(mu-O-2)(C2O4)(4)]center dot 2H(2)O (1), has been synthesized by hydrothermal technique. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the compound crystallizes in triclinic space group P-1 (2) with cell parameters a = 7.5297 (5) angstrom, b = 8.1418 (6) angstrom, c = 9.8279 (8) angstrom, alpha = 107.48 (1)degrees, beta = 99.96 (1)degrees, gamma = 95.09 (1)degrees. Four oxalate ligands binds with two metal centers in bidentate fashion and creates a rare mu-oxo bridged Al(III) dimer. Further, these dinuclear subunits, [Al-2(mu-O-2)(C2O4)(4)](4-), are linked by ethylene diamine [(NH3CH2CH2NH3)(2+)] and water molecules via hydrogen bonding through ab-planes making a two-dimensional supramolecular layered structure.
