Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare and dramatic peripartal event with a high mortality rate. The underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms remain unclear. We descibe a patient with intrapartal cardiorespiratory failure and complex shock due to amniotic fluid embolism. Both the mother and the neonate survived without impairment. We review case reports, experimental studies and pathophysiologic and therapeutic concepts.
