Vaccination trials with a Salmonella Typhimurium live vaccine for control of salmonella-infections in breeding stock

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a Salmonella typhimurium live vaccine (to reduce the incidence of salmonella infection in breeding stock. The vaccine was tested on a farrow-to-finish unit with 200 sows and on a farm with 140 sows producing feeder pigs. Fecal rectal samples were taken from 20% of the sows be-fore start of the six-month vaccination period, and then every three weeks during the six-month vaccination program. In this trial the use of the modified vaccine probably: (a) re-duced the shedding of salmonella in sows, (b) initiated a measurable antibody response, and (c) poses no apparent health and safety problems.
