摘要
The design concepts which drive productionised Intelligent Robotic Polishing (IRP) CNC polishing machines are outlined. The progress in developing strategies to preserve form when polishing ground surfaces to correct form on both pre-ground and polished surfaces is discussed. Particular consideration is given to resolving the inherent difficulties of control of centres on rotationally symmetric parts. Some experimental results are discussed for glass and metal workpieces. Finally, a number of conclusions are made about the effectiveness and generality of the 'Precessions' technique. The paper identifies the need for a machine to automate and control polishing of optics and more complex surface forms. The implications for industry are repeatable high accuracy and reduced polishing times.
