摘要
The friction-induced volatile products formation for symmetric and asymmetric polymer friction pairs as revealed by mass spectrometry is discussed. Examples include the symmetric poly(methylmethacrylate)-poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA-PMMA) and asymmetric PMMA-PS (polystyrene) friction pairs. In particular, we show that volatile products of polymers formed upon friction may differ from those formed upon thermal decomposition of the polymers or subjected to other modes of fracture (e.g., cleavage of brittle PMMA and PS).
