The kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of 1,4-thioxane by potassium ferrate

摘要
The kinetics of the reaction of 1,4-thioxane with potassium ferrate were investigated under pseudo first-order conditions. The oxidation of thioxane to the sulfone is complete in 10 to 300 s, and is first-order in ferrate, thioxane and hydrogen ion concentrations. The proposed mechanism involves the reaction of thioxane with protonated ferrate as the rate-determining step. A two-electron mechanism results in the formation of the sulfone and iron(II).
