A programmable voltage standard of fundamental accuracy has been realized with a binary sequence of nonhysteretic junctions. The series arrays of intrinsically shunted superconductor-insulator-normal conductor-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) Josephson junctions have been fabricated using the reliable Nb-Al/AlOx technology. The arrays of 8192 junctions (14 bit) are arranged in a new, improved design allowing a large Shapiro step width of 1 mA to be achieved. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
