摘要
This article contains a personal account 1 of the sequence of events leading to the first observation of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) 2-4 in 1973 in the Chemistry Department at Southampton University. The article begins with a concise explanation of SERS as understood today and ends with further developments that were stimulated by the discovery of SERS.
