Hysteroscopic Treatment of Asherman's Syndrome

In developed countries Asherman's syndrome occurs when trauma to or removal of the basal layer of endometrium in opposing areas within the uterine cavity. This is often asymptomatic but may result in hypo- or amenorrhea and can contribute to infertility and pregnancy complications. Others have severe dysmenorrhea (pain with menstruation) that may occur around the time of the anticipated menstrual period. We review their aetiology, clinical implications and the numerous methods reported for performing lyss of intrauterine adhesions. Current strategies to prevent recurrence of intrauterine adhesions have not been conclusively shown to be clinically effective, but the potential for endometrial regeneration using stem cells is an exciting modality under investigation.
