Proton conductive hybrid membranes were prepared by the sol-gel synthesis of organically modified silica gels in the presence of phosphotungstic acid (PWA), a super strong acid. The proton conductivity measured by an AC impedance method was found to be dependent on the amount of PWA which was successfully incorporated in the membrane as evident from the titration and Fourier transform infrared measurements. Furthermore, structural and thermal analyses such as SAXS, AFM and TGA, at different temperatures and concentrations, provided a significant insight into the improvement of the conductive phase. The effect of repetitive drying on the proton conductivity was also examined. Interestingly, the conductivity significantly decreased at the higher PWA concentration. The possible mechanism is discussed in the paper.
