The University of Hong Kong and the IBM Corporation have entered into a three-year Partnership to provide ThinkPad notebook computers to HKU students and staff, and to engage in collaborative IT research. The agreement, the first of its kind at a tertiary institution in Asia, is an important component of the University's long-range goal to create a state-of-the-art "digital campus." HKU students and staff will be able to access and use digital tools and resources for a wide variety of purposes. Eventually, students and staff will be able to check course schedules, register for classes, reserve library books, download syllabi, read course materials, check cafeteria menus, purchase books, schedule classrooms, check or report grades, and make appointments from classrooms, dormitories, offices, homes, the library, cafeteria, or any other locations wherever students and staff are located, and at whatever time necessary.
