NARRATION IN THE GRAPHIC NOVEL

The paper focuses on narration in comics in juxtaposition with the conventional novel and film. It will demonstrates that despite the comics being a medium in its own right, it cannot be perceived completely detached from the other two media, at least with regard to narration. In all of them, we can distinguish the narrator, the specific realization of time on the discourse level, and description, but the way they are presented usually differs depending on the medium. The first part of the paper focuses mainly on the narrator and its role in comics. Then, paper describes the narrative devices that are at the graphic story teller's disposal when they want to present time lapse, movement and various details. The purpose of doing that is to show the distinctive characteristics of comics as a narrative medium, but also to demonstrate that literary and film theory may be very helpful in analysing apiece of sequential art.
