A velocity defect chart method for estimating the friction velocity in turbulent boundary layers

摘要
A simple and new empirical method for determining the friction velocity in zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers is presented. The method relies on the collapse of the streamwise mean velocity defect profiles of the boundary layers over smooth and rough walls when normalised by the friction velocity. While the collapse of the velocity defect profiles is well established in the literature, this is the first time that it is being utilised for estimating the friction velocity.
