BOF Slag is the by-product of the processes that produce steel from a Basic Oxygen Furnace ( BOF). Chinese Steel Corporation generates 1.2 million tons of BOF Slag each year. With stabilized chemical characteristics and excellent engineering performance, BOF slag has been used in varied industrial applications including as engineering materials, raw materials for manufacturing, fertilizer, etc. The coasts of south-western and eastern Taiwan has suffered severe erosion problem for the past decades. BOF slag has larger grain size, about 50 mm to 300 mm, than beach sand, less than 2 mm, it may be more stable as the bottom sediment under wave actions in the coastal area. Laboratory studies on using BOF slag as a refill material in a coast, presumed the south-west coast of Taiwan, with jetty or offshore/detached breakwater will be studied in detail. Comparisons of beach topography changes under storm wave actions between natural sand beach and BOF slag beach have been tested in a two dimensional wave basin. The preliminary results of application of BOF slag as the material for beach nourishment are promising.
