EZW coding using non-uniform quantization

This paper presents an image coder that modifies the EZW coder and provides an improvement in its performance. The subband EZW image coder uses a uniform quantizer with a threshold (deadzone). Whereas, we know that the distribution/histogram of the wavelet tree subband coeffcients, all except the lowest subband, tend to be Laplacian. To accommodate for this, we modify the refining procedure in EZW and use a non-uniform quantizer on the coefficients that better fits their distribution. The experimental results show that the new image coder performs better than EZW.
