Spectral analysis of Cu2+:Zn2SiO4, Ni2+:Zn2SiO4 and Co2+:Zn2SiO4 nanocomposites by a sol-gel method

Nanocomposites of host Zn2SiO4 and Cu2+:Zn2SiO4, Ni2+:Zn2SiO4 and Co2+:Zn2SiO4 powders have successfully been synthesised by means of sol-gel method. Their structural and morphological studies have been carried out from the measurement of their X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Such studies have revealed their grain sizes in (20-25 nm) exhibiting their structures in willemite. Besides these, optical absorption and luminescence spectra of these nanocomposites have also been investigated. Optical absorption spectra of Cu2+:Zn2SiO4 (blue), Ni2+:Zn2SiO4 (green) and Co2+:Zn2SiO4 (pinkish red) in their xero-gel glasses and from their absorption profiles, crystal field parameter (D (q) ) and energy level characteristic Racah parameters of (B and C) have been computed. For these sol-gel powder materials showing bright colours, their emission profiles have also been measured and these emissions are found to arise due to the occurrence of d-d transitions.
