Christianity and traditional religion among the Hoga Sara of west-central Flores

The relatively recent conversion of the Hoga Sara of west-central Flores to Roman Catholicism did not move these people to completely abandon their traditional beliefs and practices. In the past few years the Catholic Church endeavored on an inculturation (inkulturasi) program that would be more accommodating towards these kinds of local customs. Inculturation, however, carries varying significance for the local population and for the Catholic Church. The Hoga Sara have resolved to practice Roman Catholicism as a form of parallel or supplementary religion to their own traditional belief system and practices.
