The Spatial-temporal Analysis of the Green Total Factor Productivity of Logistics Industry in China

The paper measures the traditional total factor productivity and green total factor productivity of logistics industry of 30 Chinese provinces and main cities during 1997-2013 and further compares them in order to provide better understanding of logistics industry growth. The green total factor productivity is measured by the Luenberger index generated through a slacks-based measure based directional distance function where CO2 emission are treated as input and undesirable output. The research finds: the Luenberger productivity index is smaller than the Malmquist index generated from traditional DEA approach indicating the technology adopted is not environment friendly and the Porter Hypothesis does not fit in China's logistics industry at the moment; the development of logistics industry is uneven where Eastern China is featured the highest productivity and Northeast China has the lowest productivity; a 'catching-up' effect is founded indicating that the gaps of logistics productivity of provinces and cities tended to be shorten.
