This article reflects on the state of the energy studies field, and it proposes recommendations for better integrating social science into energy research. Realizing a future energy system that is low- carbon, safe, and reliable will require fuller and more meaningful collaboration between the physical and social sciences. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
