Two-photon excitation and quantum interference for a ladder atom in a cavity with injected squeezed light

The two-photon excitation of a ladder atom by an injected squeezed vacuum is studied in the bad cavity limit. Our analytic theory shows the two-photon excitation rate to be composed of terms linearly and quadratically dependent on the squeezed photon number N, in agreement in this respect with the recent experiment of Georgiades et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 (1995) 3426]. We provide a simple physical explanation of these features, and predict a new effect due to quantum interference-a pronounced, sharp peak in the fluorescence spectrum under appropriate conditions.
