An Experimental Assessment of the Components of Rolling Friction of Balls at Small Cyclic Displacements

摘要
Oscillation of a physical pendulum supported by two balls on a flat surface is studied experimentally and theoretically when the balls are displaced within a range from a few micrometers to a few nanometers. Rolling friction coefficients are calculated. A phenomenological theory of attenuation of oscillations is advanced, allowing the estimation of energy losses for the hysteresis of the forces of elasticity and adhesion and the measurement of the work of adhesion in detachment with high accuracy.
