Although TVWS bands offer additional frequency bands for different applications, a lot of coordination efforts are required in order to achieve efficient usage of the frequency bands to avoid interference. Since each service operator uses their own security systems and firewalls; there will be many coordination systems between the approved databases and the individual commercial base stations (service provider, enterprise, residential). Also, to manage channel access and channel allocation, energy detection results for detecting broadcast signals need to be communicated on a timely basis. This means that the reliability and robustness of coordination systems depend on the reliability and robustness of the end devices. In addition, energy detection and communicating the detection results add additional power consumption to the end devices, which makes utilizing the TVWS for low-power applications such as wireless sensor networks even more challenging, compounded by the TVWS channel reliability issues.
