The measurement of wool colour in CIE colour space

This report looks at the ability to determine wool colour in CIE units, the internationally accepted units for colour measurement. As raw wool is always measured behind a glass window it becomes necessary to include the glass in the calibration procedure. The presence of the glass will give rise to Tristimulus values that diverge from the CIE defined colour space unless some form of correction is applied. Ceramic tiles are the most common material used to calibrate instruments to operate in CIE colour space. Two sets of coloured tiles, with certified values, were used to determine the corrections necessary to provide colour measurement in CIE units when measurements are made behind-glass.
