摘要
Carbonation in polymer-modified mortars has been reported. The carbonation and chlorides are the main causes of the degradation of cement-based materials. This reaction has several effects on the material, mainly cracking and efflorescence phenomena in the case of coating mortars. These mortars used in thin layers for surface covering are the most exposed to carbonation phenomenon. The phenolphthalein was sprayed on the section of fragment of samples cut from the specimen submitted to the carbonation test. Images obtained by SEM investigation show that this technique allows just a qualitative estimation of the carbonation. Its quantification seems to need a heaviness image processing. This coupling allows both a qualitative and a quantitative estimation of the carbonation degree in this kind of material.
