TENDENCIES IN THE MANAGEMENT OF BUILDING SANDSTONES IN POLAND

The paper presents the most important information about building sandstones from deposits in Poland. Taking into consideration current situation on domestic building market there were presented possibilities of this raw material utilization and its sources were shown. The sandstones useful for the production of dimension blocks, slabs, split tiles or building aggregates production occur in sediments of Intra-Sudetic and North Sudetic Basin, sediments of periphery of the Swietokrzyskie Mountains, and sediments of Flysch Carpathians. In each of mentioned areas the number of sandstones' deposits, their reserves, as well as the number of producers were presented. The region of Lower Silesia is the most significant because of the largest reserves and the highest level of output. The lower mining output, but the highest number of the sandstones' deposits and producers has Swietokrzyski region. Among Carpathian sandstones, which are utilize mainly for road aggregates production, only four varieties (with block structure) are used in architecture. There are Green Godula sandstones, Grey-yellow Istebna sandstone, Grey Krosno sandstones and Grey-beige Magura sandstones. The presented data on the reserves and output refer to 2006, but this paper gives also information about deposits recognized, or such, where production has been started just recently. Moreover the article presents the statistics of trade of building stories in Poland as well as gives some examples of Polish and foreign sandstones utilization in modern architecture of Krakow.
