Glasses in the TeO2-Sb2O4 binary system

Both the thermal properties and the local structure of glasses prepared in the TeO2-Sb2O4 binary system were investigated. The increase of the glass transition temperature with the antimony oxide concentration indicates a structural evolution of the glass matrix. Infrared and Te L-III edge X-ray absorption spectra revealed that the addition of Sb2O4 content to the TeO2 glass former induces the transformation of the tellurium environment from TeO4 trigonal bipyramids to TeO3 trigonal pyramids. Furthermore, Sb-121 Mossbauer spectroscopy has shown the presence of a mixed valence state, Sb-III and Sb-v, whith a proportion that depends on the concentration. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V.
