Second harmonic generation and structure of mixed alkali titanosilicate glasses

The second harmonic generation (SHG) was observed from thermally poled 7.5K(2)O . 7.5Cs(2)O . xTiO(2) (85 - x)SiO2 (mol%) glasses prepared by the conventional melting and quenching technique. The SHG intensity depended upon the TiO2 content and the SHG maximum appeared at TiO2 = 25 mol%. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), the existence of fivefold coordinated Ti4+ was deduced from the pre-edge peak position in X-ray absorption near the edge structure (XANES) spectrum. The Raman scattering spectra was similar to that obtained from compounds containing fivefold coordinated Ti4+. From the relationship between the amount of fivefold coordinated Ti4+ and SHG intensity, we suggest that fivefold coordinated Ti4+ may relate to the SHG center. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
