It is important to fabricate bio-mimetic artificial bone (BMAB) with the similar structure and properties as human bones. An innovative concept for manufacturing the custom-tailored BMAB has been proposed, which is achieved by layer slurry gelation. ne bone scaffolds with complex and delicate structure are produced using the computer-controlled three-dimensional (3D) rapid prototyping (RP) system. Sodium alginate and calcium chloride are adopted in a gelling procedure by trial-and-error. In order to obtain well-dispersed and non-agglomerated ceramic slurry, certain alumina is added as dispersant for the hydroxyapatite (HA) suspensions in order to improve HA rheological properties and maximize its solid phase content. With the proposed methods, the porous HA bio-mimetic artificial bone scaffolds with good mechanical properties can be fabricated.
