Alkali-activated cements and concretes are attracting more and more attention due to the use of industrial by-products or waste materials as their major ingredients their excellent performance in some aspects. This paper reviews the recent researches from all over the world on different durability aspects, such as water permeability, chloride transportation, acid corrosion resistance, salt corrosion resistance, freezing-thawing resistance, alkali-aggregate reaction, carbonation, corrosion of steel and fire resistance of alkali-activated cements and concretes. Properly designed alkali-activated slag cements and concretes show better performance than Portland cement in many aspects, but they also have disadvantages. Recommendations for future researches are also proposed.
