Fatigue-crack initiation in a Fe-C-Si-Mn steel with carbide-free lathy bainite

摘要
With carbide-free lathy bainite by isothermal transformation, a Si-Mn steel has high strength and high toughness, Its fatigue initiation was investigated by axial fatigue cycling at room temperature and at a stress ratio of -1. The fractures were observed in a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results show that all of the fatigue cracks initiated at surface and shallow sub-surface inclusions. Defects in the steel are the main fatigue-crack initiator. Three types of crack initiation at inclusion sites were observed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
