Hot extrusion reaction synthesis: Simultaneous synthesis and forming from elemental powders

摘要
A novel approach to processing metallic and intermetallic materials, and their composites, which combines synthesis, sintering and deformation of elemental metallic powders is described. Semi-finished rods and sheets of Al-Ni alloys and of Al-Ni-SiC and Al-Ti-SiC composites have been produced by extrusion of powders at relatively low temperatures for short times. A preliminary investigation of the microstructures and mechanical properties of the extruded materials is reported and the dominant mechanisms are discussed.
