According to the Institute of Medicine Relieving Pain in America report and the subsequently released National Pain Strategy, pain affects more than 100 million Americans and costs more than half a trillion dollars per year. We have a greater appreciation for the complex nature of pain and realize that it can develop into a disease in itself. We must focus on prevention of chronic pain and interdisciplinary approaches, particularly for the most persistent pain problems. For precision pain medicine to be successful, health systems must be linked with biomarkers of chronic pain and its treatment.
