Neurocognitive disorders play an important rote in many mental disorders. They are not only accompanying phenomena, but also depict elementary characteristics of neuropathophysiological changes in many disorders. Neuropsychology and the neuropsychological diagnostics serve to determine and quantify neurocognitive disorders and their effects on activity and participation. However, they can also make a substantial contribution to the development of etiological models of mental illness. The following article describes the historical development of neuropsychology, the methodological approach (lesion-symptom cartography), the importance of cognitive models in neuropsychology, and important developments in modern neuropsychology. Finally, the benefits of neuropsychological evaluation in psychiatry and psychotherapy are discussed.
