Mechanical properties of near-gamma titanium aluminides reinforced with high volume percentages of TiB2

Near-γ titanium aluminide matrix composites, reinforced with high volume percentages of TiB2, exhibit compressive strengths, short-rod toughness values, and elastic modulus values comparable to those characteristic of structural ceramics. The actual strength of the composite relies upon both volume percentage of TiB2, and, like that observed in monolithic titanium aluminides, the aluminum concentration in the matrix. Trends in the observed fracture toughness are opposite to that observed in monolithic variants, however, suggesting the influence of conventional composite-based mechanisms of damage tolerance.
