摘要：
The paper discusses, via bibliographic and documental research, how practices of the thematic representation are related to the activities of the Word Wide Web Consortium (W3C) for Semantic Web. First, presents the concepts and practices of thematic representation within the Information Science. Then discusses the concepts of the Semantic Web, highlighting one of its components, the vocabularies. Finally, checks how the thematic representation has been used in Semantic Web applications. The research was developed in Portuguese and English languages, in papers and books in the information science as well as in documents available in the site of the W3C. With the research it was found that the practices of the Organization of Information, specifically the Thematic Representation are compatible with and applied within the framework of the recommendations of the W3C, as can be verified in the studied projects that are in development, for example, the CDD and CDU.
