The thermal spike model: A possible way to describe the effects induced in Y2O3 by swift heavy ion irradiations

摘要
Micrometric powders of yttrium oxide have been irradiated with swift heavy ions. Due to the huge energy deposited by the 4.5MeV/u Lead ions on the target electrons, a phase transformation from cubic to monoclinic structure has been observed by X-ray diffraction. The irradiation with 11.5MeV/u Sulphur ions did not lead to such a transformation. An interpretation is given through the thermal spike model which gives the radius of a cylindrical track of monoclinic Y2O3 as a function of the electronic energy loss of the incident ion.
