摘要
The features of gas formation and changes in the molecular structure and performance properties of BN grade waterproofing asphalt under gamma-irradiation at an absorbed dose to 200 kGy have been studied. The radiation-chemical yield of total gases did not exceed 0.46 molecule/100 eV, showing high resistance to gas evolution. Changes in the molecular structure confirm the occurrence of destructive processes in the polyaromatic moiety. The penetration and ductility of the irradiated samples increase by factors of 8 and 10, respectively, and the softening and flash points are 40 degrees C lower than those in unirradiated samples. The mechanism of action of ionizing radiation on bituminous compositions has been discussed in terms of competition between destruction and polycondensation processes in high-molecular-weight heterogeneous systems, such as waterproofing asphalt.
