A new set-up for the generation of humidity in the PPB range

Over the years a standard humidity generator has been developed at NMi Van Swinden Laboratorium. The generator principle is single pressure and two-temperature and ranges between frostpoints from -60 degreesC and dewpoints +70 degreesC. As a consequence of the industry's request for traceability at frostpoints lower than -60 degreesC, a new set-up has now been established to extend the range downwards to ppb levels. This new set-up is based on mixing the output of the standard humidity generator with a flow of dry reference gas. The output flow of the standard humidity generator is controlled by one of three mass flow controllers each for one of the required flow ranges. Based on the flow-ratio, the known frostpoint of the "wet" gas, the estimated frostpoint of the reference gas and the pressures of the gasses, the frostpoint of the mixture is calculated. The set up is described in this paper as well as an uncertainty analysis on the basis of measurements.
