Water is fundamental for life. The diligent use of potable water dates back to ancient times where its use and consumption had to be carefully evaluated. Specifically, Frontinus (97-103 a d.), who served as 'curator aquarum' for emperors Nerva and Trajan, published extensively on this topic Besides gauging processes for potable water, measuring algorithms are also required for the evaluation of water energy such as for effluent water applications Thus, in contrast to measurement algorithms for 'clean' water, the latter applications require the additional evaluation of water quality and temperature as important factors. The present article examines accuracy levels in measurements for water-quantity determinations under realistic conditions The question of the theoretically achievable goal seems to be of interest for both end-users as well as utility providers. The second question, on the contrary, has a more basic character and is thus directed at the national metorology institutions, also termed NMIs (for example PTB in Germany and BEV in Austria)
