Management of the patient with thyroid disease

Thyroid diseases are very common in the general population and warrant the development of nursing expertise in their management. This article focuses on the assessment and management of the following thyroid disorders in an ambulatory setting: goiter, hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, and thyroid nodules. To understand the diagnostic tests and treatment plan, clinically useful pathophysiology is reviewed. Proper diagnosis and care of thyroid disorders is relatively inexpensive compared to treating other health problems, yet the well-planned management of thyroid diseases has a large impact on the well-being of those affected.
