Peroxide bleaching is known to increase pulp strength, but the effect on individual fibres has not been studied previously. Long single fibres were selected from the 14/28 fraction of a thermomechanical pulp produced in our pilot plant under conventional conditions. Bleached and unbleached fibres were subjected to further mechanical treatment in the longitudinal direction in a single-fibre fatigue cell to estimate the potential for further development. Our results indicated that the fibre response is related to microscopic fibre structure. We also found that bleaching increases fibre flexibility primarily by changing the geometry of fibre cross-sections, which lowers the moment of inertia.
