Synthesis of centimeter-size Ag-doped Zr-Cu-Al metallic glasses with large plasticity

摘要
Glass forming ability of Ni-free Zr48Cu45-xAl7Agx (x = 0, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 5 and 8 at.%) alloys has been studied. It is found that centimeter-diameter bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) can be synthesized for quaternary Zr48Cu45-xAl7Agx, (x = 2, 3, 5 and 8 at.%) alloys using copper mold casting. The maximum diameter, 12 mm, is found for the Zr48Cu43Al7Ag2 alloy while the ternary Zr48Cu45Al7 can only be cast into fully BMG with a diameter of 5 mm. The Zr48Cu43Al7Ag2 BMG alloy also exhibits a plasticity of about 3% during compression at ambient temperature together with a yielding strain of 1.9% and a yielding strength of 1900MPa. The developed Zr48Cu43Al7Ag2 BMG alloy might have biomedical applications. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
