摘要
The aim of this essay is to introduce this special issue by providing a brief, critical overview of its subject: Shakespeare and Protestantism. The appearance of this special issue marks a significant departure from recent studies in Shakespeare and "religion'', which have been dominated largely by arguments about Shakespeare and Catholicism. Why literary criticism has tended traditionally to resist reading Shakespeare's works through or against "Protestantism'', and what might be at stake in doing so now, is explored here.
