Synthesis of 2-(aryl methylene)-(1H)-indane-1,3-(2H)-diones as potential fungicidal and bactericidal agents

摘要
Reaction of diethyl phthalate 1 and ethyl acetate 2 in the presence of sodium metal and ethanol affords indane-1, 3-dione 3, which have been substituted at C-2 position with different aromatic aldehydes 4, to yield their respective aryl derivatives of indane-1,3-dione 5a-h. These derivatives are evaluated for their antifungal and antibacterial activity. The structures of all the compounds are determined by IR, H-1 NMR and mass spectrometry.
