Synthesis and atomic structures of boron nitride nanotubes

Boron nitride (BN) nanotubes were fabricated by arc-melting LaB6 and boron/FeOx powder compacts in nitrogen/ argon gas atmosphere. The nanotubes were studied by high-resolution electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The diameters of the BN nanotubes are in the range of 10-100nm. The present work indicates that La could be a good candidate as a catalyst to produce the BN fullerene-like materials by changing the ratio of LaB6/B. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
