Crack Propagation in Tool Steel X38CrMoV5 (AISI H11) in SET Specimens

摘要
An approach was proposed for investigating the sub-surface damage in hot-forming tools during machining and crack propagation in tool steel X38CrMoV5 (AISI H11) in SET specimens. The crack propagation experiments were carried out on a servo-hydraulic universal testing machine Walter + BAI LFV 40 at an ambient temperature of 25°C. Propagation was optically observed in situ with a Questar® observation microscope without interruptions. Three different thicknesses, such as 2.5, 1.0 and 0.6mm were tested to evaluate the effects of thickness on the crack propagation behavior at room temperature. A plane partition was defined on one edge of the SET specimen to define a crack. The edge of the plane inside the specimen defined the crack front and isolated a region of sufficient volume around the partition.
