Inorganic ammonium salts catalyze the direct aldol reaction between unmodified ketones and aldehydes to furnish the corresponding beta-hydroxy ketones in aqueous media. The reactions are highly chemoselective and operationally simple. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
