A two-dimensional supramolecular complex, [Zn(HA)(2)(hmta)] center dot 2H(2)O (1) (H(2)A: 9-ethylcarbazole-3,6-dicarboxylic acid, hmta: 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane), has been prepared by hydrothermal synthesis and characterized by IR spectra, elemental analysis, TG analysis. The result of single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the 2D supramolecular open framework contains 9.932 x 12.059 angstrom channels formed by significant hydrogen bonds and pi-pi interactions. Furthermore, the solid state fluorescent determinations show that the complex exhibits a strong emission band at 432 nm.
